Yes it was interesting reading the reactions of the American's when they got their hands on the G7e.
But what about the Mk X and Mk XIV? They were under design before any German torpedoes were captured.
The Mk X was designed in 1917
The Mk XIV was designed in 1930
The British Mk VIII was designed in 1925
The G7a was designed in 1930. What is interesting is that the G7 is a 19.7 inch designed in 1910. I wonder why the Germany felt is necessary to increase the diameter of the G7a by approx 1.3 inches?
I doubt very much that the Germans built their G7 based on the design of the Mk X.
Given this, I would imagine that the US Mk VVIII was 21 inches primarily because the MK XIV was also 21 inches and there was no need to change torpedo tube sizes.
All this is interesting, but I am still scratching my head on why Japan, UK, and US all developed 21 inch/533 mm separately?
Were the torpedoes of all three nations developed separately or was there a unifying theory being used? Or, as I stated in my original post, was there a manufacturing issue that made 21 inch/533mm tubes attractive?
