Hi Dave,
Eberhard Rössler's book "THE U-BOAT: The evolution and technical history of the German submarune". The 2001 edition page 234 has diagrams of the XXIB (2 side x 3 forward) and XXIC (2 side x 2 side x 3 forward) on each side.
"In a discussion at the Ship Construction Commission on 19 November 1943, The Type XXIB was seen as the successor to the Type XXI. However, because of their considerable size, these boats were actually long-range, operational boats, which did not need a multiplicity of ready-to-fire torpedo tubes."
"U-boat Type XXI was too large for the convoy campaign in the North Atlantic; it was also too costly and could not, therefore, be considered in the long term as a good replacement for the Type VIIC.
I believe XXIB and XXIC were only on paper and never built...
Regards,
