Hello Comet61,
Steering the Type VII U-boat was acomplished by manipulating a switch device located on the forward bulkhead in the control room. This switch was similar to the two switch units in the control room to control the stern and bow dive plains. There was a manual steering wheel located in the stern torpedo room in case the electrical control failed.
