Hi Mike,
The plating is gradually reduced throughout the tapered sections fore and aft to 16 mm (from 18 mm in midship).

I have not found the platinium in U864 cargo manifest, but maybe (along with mercury) it has been transfered to Japan as a cargo? It could be used as a alloying addition while manufacturing jet engines.
