Wow! So it was not a valve, but a cover. It seems to me that would be tough to replace with water rushing in, unless the sea strainer cover was attached to the pipe like the lid on a mason jar (it's what comes to mind). It could have been a fatal endeavor had sea water mixed with battery acid producing chlorine gas. But perhaps the water did not rise above the bottom border of the control room hatch.
I am am anxious to visit Chicago to tour the U-505. The tours are probably structured and therefore breif for someone like me interested in the mechanics of the boat. I will read all the material I can get my hands on before I visit.
