Oxygen and carbon dioxide

I have tried to find, without success, how a U boat ( my interest is in the type IX) manages to provide oxygen and remove carbon dioxide from crews when submerged. I know that U boats were large, but they had large crews too. I appreciate any insight of the technology invovled. Thank you. Pras
