Clutch between motor and the propeller was also called main clutch.

They were actuated pneumatically, however controls were located in the engine room, near the clutches. So they were not operated remotely. Pneumatic actuators only released operators from work of engaging and disengaging.
In emergency, clutches could be controlled by means of the hand-wheels.
