Re: Was the Observation Periscope in Type VII and IX U-Boats at fixed height.

The eyepiece of the periscope in the conning tower (the attack periscope) was fixed in height, while the extendable part of the periscope tube moved up and down out of the boat. The periscope was turned by a hydraulic system using foot pedals while the operator sat on a seat. The eyepiece scope in the control room (air search periscope) moved up and down as the scope was raised and lowered out of the boat. The scope was turned by hand with the operator standing.
