Hi Urs.
Thank you very much for your suggestion, which makes perfect sense. One detail that I didn't share, because I didn't realise the significance, is that Fürbringer is named in the notes for the copy of the image held by the Scarborough Maritime Heritage Centre: "UB39 (Furbringer) North sea fisherman watch as their trawler sunk 13th July 1916". So the clue to the identity of the book was there all the time.
I'll share my story with this forum when I've finished it, hopefully next month.
