8,8 Deck Gun

Out of curiosity, the 8,8 flak and armor piercing rounds are quite large, the cases are close to three feet in height. Did the U-Boat arm use an 8,8 shell of smaller height? I say this because the space required to store the common issue 8,8 shells would be quite large indeed.
