Scuttling Explosives and Booby traps

I am reading about the captures of the U-110 and the U-505 and that one of the main concerns of the boadring party were preset explosives as part of a scuttling system or as booby traps. Were these systems built into the boats or were the rigged as a last desperate attempt to avoid capture. What did the explosives consist of and where where they set? Any info would be appreciated.
