Well...
We have had a tremendously interesting discussion of the WW II u-boat and how it might fare today if modernized ... all because our friend Robert had the courage to pose the question. So ...we now have new, modern versions of the diesel/electric powered submarine putting to sea and some of you have already offered some information on these new designs. Here are a few things to consider:

(1) What is the mission of these new boats; i.e: what is the job they are expected to perform?
(2) What are the design requirements that will enable these boats to accomplish this mission? Consider
(a)Structure/Hydrodynamics/Control
(b)Propulsion
(c)Communications
(d)Detectors & Countermeasures systems
(e)Weapons
(f)Habitability
(g) Maintenance & Supply

(3) Do the new designs meet these technical requirements?

(4) What are the problem areas in these new designs yet to be resolved or improved?

Well lets see what we can do with this discussion.
