Hi Everyone,
Just a note to say that Con has had his 99 th birthday on the 11th March.
He was born in Auckland, New Zealand, on the 11th March 1911. Lived at Waipapakauri hotel north of Kaitaia, (a good place to down a few beers), with his family, starting work every morning at 5 am, deciding to join the navy in 1938 during the Munich talks as he thought war would break out soon.He also thought the navy would be easier than farm & baking work,also he could see the world.He served on board the S/Ms Proteus,Torbay,H28,H50,Ultor,Tuna,H33 & CO of Scythian. He was voluntary captain of Spirit of Adventure & Spirit of New Zealand. Awarded the OBE in 1996, this award was recommended by his good friend Admiral Sir Gordon Tait another New Zealander. Con is still driving, but he gave up sailing at the age of 90 as he ran aground on a reef the yacht Viking built around 1890. Hs decision was he didnt want to damage a yacht older than him self.
Con is the patron of the New Zealand branch of the Submariners assoc. & the oldest member.
