<HTML>The story about RN preparing to hunt for French cruisers was published in 1960s by one of Polish Navy officers, Wojciech Francki. At that time he commanded the BLYSKAWICA. He died few years ago, so we cannot ask him for more details.

BLYSKAWICA indeed exceeded 40 kts during trials: on 23 Nov 1937 she made 40,4 kts during 4-hour full power trials. However Polish side argued that such speed was reached with overloaded boilers and finally both sides settled on 39,6 kts, probably to save money that had to be paid o the shipyard if the contract speed was exceeded.
