<HTML>Hello Helen,
St Francis ex USS Bancroft
Destroyer 1.190 tons commissioned RCN 24/9/40. Training ship 1944, sunk 14/7/45 collison with SS Winding Gulf off Sagonnet RI
It would appear she was a Lend lease Destroyer built in 1917. During her time with the RCN her penant number was I-93 (as the USS Bancroft DD-256)
These vessels were known to the RN and RCN as Town Class Destroyers
HOWEVER there was another USS Bancroft built in !941 so might this be the ship you are looking for?
Doug, thanks for the tip on that new book.
Regards Roger</HTML>
