The name is CLEVELAND. She was a Type 1 'Hunt' class escort destroyer.
Built by Yarrow at Scotstoun, ordered 21 March 1939; laid down 7 July 1939; launched 24 April 1940 and completed 18 September 1940.
details: 1000/1340 tons armed 2 x twin 4", 1 x quad 2 pdr
I don't have full details of her career, but in 1943-44 she would have been serving in the Mediterranean. She sailed from UK in November 1942 as escort for convoy KMS2; On 5 July 1943 rendered assistance to torpedoed ammo. ship 'Devis' off Algiers; July 1943 supported landings in Sicily; In September 1943 supported the Salerno landings; August 1944 the landings in the south of France; Sept-October 1944 in the Aegean clearing the the islands and Greek mainland of German troops.
The ship was sold for scrap in 1957 but never made it to the scrapyard, being wrecked on Rhosilli sands en-route. The ship was stripped in situ, the remains being blown up in December 1959.</HTML>
