OBDURATE was one of eight 'O' class destroyers built 1941-42.
Tech: 1610 / 2270 tons 345' x 35'
2 boilers/2 shafts/geared turbines = 36 knots
armed = 5 x single 4", 1 x quad 2 pdr, 4 x 20 mm; she was also fitted for minelaying, being capable of carrying sixty mines, with reduced armament.
Built by Denny at Dumbarton, she was launched 19 Feb. 1942 and completed in September 1942.
She served in the 17th Destroyer Flotilla between 1942 - 1945; she saw much service in escorting the Russian convoys between Dec' 42 and Jan' 44.
During this time she fought in the Battle of the Barents Sea, against the cruiser 'Hipper' and was present at the sinking of 'U-203' . In Jan' 44 she was badly damaged by an acoustic torpedo fired by 'U.360', which put her out of action for 14 weeks. Repairs were made at Murmansk in Russia before returning to England for further repair work at Wallsend.
After the war she was initially based at Portsmouth, in a training role before going into reserve in 1948. She was again used for training, this time based at Chatham, between 1953 and 1956, then back into reserve.
She was scrapped at Inverkeithing in 1964.
