My Dad was 33 years old when he was drafted and died at 65. He was the oldest guy on the ship. He was in the engine room with 5 or 6 other guys the first time the Swallow was hit. It is my understanding that he turned the handle, which was very hot from the fire and saved the other guys. He told me there were a LOT of secret things on the ship that would never be divulged. He also told me some stories. He said he went to the officers dining room, and said, "You guys don't do anything, but you have all the food! So, he took all their food-kind of like Caine Mutiny. He smoked, and said he used to light rolls of toilet paper on fire in the trough where all the guys went. He was in the Pacific three times. The first and second times the Swallow was hit, and then on a Hospital ship by a kamikaze. People who didn't live then or weren't told about these heinos crimes don't understand why the US did what it did.
