"LOST OPPORTUNITY?" Hardly.......

During WWII the U.S. Navy built a small runway on a LST's main deck.
The Brodie System, which consisted of cable, 500' long, and strung
between two masts. A "hook" mounted on top of the aircraft permitted the liaison aircraft to take off and land while suspended some 50' above
the ocean surface. A trolley with an attached sling underneath caught
the hook mounted above the center-of-gravity of the airplane. The plane was raised from or lowered to the deck by tightening or slackening the
cable. The planes could take off as well as land using the Brodie device.........But, these little lightweight Piper L-4s could not carry bombs; they were used only for scouting. The autogyros could not carry much
of a bomb load either.

The best ASW defence against the U-boats was the "Jeep" aircraft carrier.

Hope this answers your question,
