Greetings Mr Gould,
I am the nephew of George Lloyd, and was most interested to read your message. I knew about your grandfather through George's account and also Mr Pearce's book. I agree about HMS Belfast - I visited last year after hearing that they had reconstructed a Transmitting Station just as it would have been when Trinidad was torpedoed - and I am full of admiration for the hardships they all endured. I heard from my uncle that when in action they were not allowed to sleep in hammocks, in case the rolled up hammocks were needed for repairing holes in the hull(!), so they had to sleep on the deck - steel deck in the Arctic Ocean - serious heavy duty that.
I expect you have pictures of HMS Trinidad from the web, but I have a few snaps taken of the Royal Marines in barracks while she was being fitted out. I would be interested to see a picture of Warrant Officer Gould if you have one. Did they send an Arctic Star medal for him a few years ago? They were awarded posthumously, after a media campaign, and I think I applied for one for George and got it about a year later, even though he died in 1998.
Are you in touch with any other family or survivors?
Anyway, it is interesting to make contact.
best wishes,
Bill Lloyd
