Hi Ron,
on 31/8/40 the DDs of the 20th Flotilla (Express, Ivanhoe, Icarus & Intrepid, escorted by Kelvin, Jupiter & Vortigern) sailed on a minelaying expedition to the SE corner of the North Sea.
About the same time the German XCMs Roland, Tannenberg & Cobra were busy laying minefield SW.2, 40 nm NW of the Texel. RAF scout planes sighted the Germans & reported them to the DDs, causing them to attempt an interception, but the route they chose brought them right on top of the newly-laid field, Esk hit 1 or 2 (details needed) mines and went dead in the water, Ivanhoe went to her assistance but hit one mine & remained disabled as well. She was scuttled by a torpedo from Kelvin as towing appeared unfeasible.
