Hello Both,
Seems that John got his information from Royal Navy Trawlers part 2 by Gerald Toghill.
I think Toghill got his wires crossed on this one. U-551 was in fact sunk by depth charges from the armed trawler HMS VISENDA. E/S/E of Vik Iceland 62.37N 16.47W. 23/3/41. He (Toghill) acknowledeges this fact on page 509 of his book.
As regards to the shelling by U-564 it seems he also has these trawlers mixed up. Again he claims on page 509 that HMS VISENDA was shelled by U-564 on 22nd June 1941.
I can find no conformation of this, either on this site or other sources. Another U-Boat perhaps? Maybe someone could enlighten us.
Not being picky but the fishing numbers Toghill gives for both VASCAMA and VISENDA would also appear to be incorrect.
It may sound as if I have a "downer" on Toghills book. Far from it. It is a very useful database but as always with these works covering such a large subject, mistakes are bound to occur.
regards
Roger.
