Thanks Michel for the link, though I was aware of that page.
However the problem remains that one official source (DANFS) followed by others (Rohwer, hazegrey, etc.) "sinks" MEREDITH on mines.
Suddenly there springs up another theory which is supported by another official source (Naval Historical Center) so it cannot be just brushed aside.
Regarding Cdr Knuepfer's story - I would like to know if it is posible to distinguish between a mine explosion and torpedo (or glide bomb in this case) one. In my opinion (though certainly I am not an expert) the only thing one knows for sure is that there was an explosion. Whether it was mine, torpedo or anything else is just an opinion, unless further evidence is found.
Also - if you read the CO's story - could not the explosion occur INSIDE the boiler room (note that even the superstructure deck was blown away!!)?
