I served 2 years on the USS WILLARD KEITH (DD-775), a SUMNER-class 2200-ton destroyer and 2 years on the USS
JOSEPH P. KENNEDY, JR (DD-850), A 2250-ton GEARINg-class
destroyer. Both used the same four boilers, until they received the
FRAM modification/upgrade after WWII.
I don't disagree with your "possible theory" of a boiler explosion, however, how can it be proven?"
Btw, I served 12 years on "targets' and 12 years on submarines......
