USS HALE / HMS Caldwell

My Father was a Petty Officer aboard the HMS Caldwell formerly the USS Hale. He was aboard that ship when it was adrift and towed to Halifax for repairs. I still have accounts and items from the ship when the British took over during that lease / Lend period.
I am curious to know how they gave the "Caldwell" its name. There is Caldwell New Jersey and my Father was billited there during the take over of the destroyer. However there are three small villages in England bearing the same name. From reading some of the history it only mentions that ships were given names from the country to which Navy was taking over the vessle.
The villages are so insignificant and small that I would be surprised if it was these. I certainly would appreciate anyone who can help with this information.
