Way back at the end of WW2 my father Harold P BARRETT was a commissioned engineer and looked after the workshops etc on Beauly Firth. I think that it was his last ship after 27+ years in the RN She was a unique vessel, specially converted to be part of the "Fleet Train" which repaired aircraft. Moray Firth did the fuselage and B.Firth repaired the (Piston)engines but had test benches for running up Radial and inline engines like Merlins revving them up to 2400 RPM when engines either passed or flew apart I was in the control room when they were doing one! Green and purple Hioctane fuel (AVGAS) was used
There were ultrasonic crack detectors in the workshops which showed how advanced the USA equipment was I visited the ship when she was anchored in The Firth of Forth but cannot remember the date. I was at George Heriott's School and was excited at being allowed to cox and steer the RAF air/sea rescue laumch back under the Forth Bridge and Land us at S Queensferry where we got the SMT bus and walked to Corstorphine over Clermiston Hill. Tell me more please Ian M Barrett
SUPPORT A NATIONAL WW2 RADAR CENTRE AS IWM AND SC MUS AND NMM dont have one
The Collectionn at HMS COLLINGWOOD has been downsized and hopefully will be saved but needs a permanent home and a little funding to allow the few remaining volunteers to get it established Please write to your MP/ AdmlLord WEST/ Bill GATES/ Alan SUGAR and any other prospective Benefactor. RADAR and RDF won the war for us and gave us the digital age too--- 30 yrs under the Official Secrets Act did not help! Lest they forget, HELP now please
