Bulolo - built as a passenger/cargo steamer for Burns, Philip & Co. for service in the Pacific (Australia-Pacific Islands-USA). Built by Barclay-Curle, Whiteinch, Glasgow, she was launched in 1938.
6276 tons (gross) 412ft x 58ft
Diesel engines/2 shafts = 15 knots
Requisitioned by the Admiralty in September 1939, originally for use as an armed merchant cruiser, being supplied with an armament of 7 x 6 inch guns, and commissioned in January 1940.
In 1942 she underwent a major conversion, to a Landing Ship Headquarters (LSH). For this she was rearmed, with 4 x 4 inch, 5 x 40mm and 14 x 20mm guns. She was fitted to carry six landing craft and facilities to carry 258 troops and equipment. She was also provided with an extensive communications outfit.
Took part in -
Landings in North Africa (November 1942). Sailed from the Clyde 26 October in convoy as part of the Eastern Task Force; arrived Algiers beach head 8 November; entered Algiers on 9 November "to an enthusiastic welcome from assembled crowds" .
Landings in Sicily (July 1943). Sailed Port Said 5 July in assault convoy; arrived 'Acid North' beach 10 July.
Landings at Anzio (january 1944) - sailed Naples 21 Jan in assault group D; arrived beach head 22 Jan. Remained off the beaches acting as a fighter direction ship.
Landings at Normandy (June 1944) - Part of Force G (HQ ship of Commodore Douglas-Pennant); landings on British beaches
Landings in Malaya (September 1945) - sailed from Madras, India 3 Sep arrived Morib beach head 9 Sep; continued to enter Singapore.
Landings in Sumatra (November 1945) - Indian Army 5th Division landed to occupy on 1st November.
She returned to England and was handed back to her civilian owners in December 1946
