My mother-in-law was a POW as a child in Surabaya, Java. At the end of the war, her family was rescued by the Ghurkas who evacuated them under fire from Indonesian insurgents. The ship that they boarded in Surabaya harbour was the Bulolo on the 1st November 1945. It took them to Singapore where they were billeted in the barracks near Changi. She remembers the unbelievable kindness of the British sailors who gave up their cabins to accomodate the hundreds of immaciated women and children involved. They went to endless trouble to cheer up the children. She is with me now at my computer and sends her thanks to any surviving crew members of the Bulolo.
