Hi Craig,
the only British cruiser which seem to fit the bill is #59 Newfoundland, torpedoed by MMI Ascianghi on 23/7/43. She underwent temporary repairs at Malta then sailed to Boston but in August, not July. There was no damaged British cruiser crossing the Atlantic in July, of that I am positive.
I am unable to find any Uboot report of such attack as you describe, all gun attacks in July and August were made in the Antilles or off the Brazilian coast against sailing vessels.
Could it be that the ship being escorted was not a cruiser? It seems strange that a ship the size of direct could be pegged for this duty: her size was small (295 ts) and endurance insufficient for a crossing at anything but slow speed (inadvisable if escorting a cruiser, albeit a damaged one).
Do you have anything additional as far as position, date or anything that could narrow the search?
Regards, Brian
