Craig,
do you have any details of the location where the incident took place, geographical coordinates, time from the last port, heading or anything that can assist in determining where it happened?
I am thinking that perhaps one of the boats which were lost at this time may be responsible and failed to transmit the report prior to being sunk. Since we have the loss locations for all 11 uboote lost between 3-12 July 1943, it would be possible to determine which was where when the gun engagement took place but we need the location.
I have rechecked all crossings by damaged vessels under british flag & still cannot locate a heavily damaged one fitting the time frame, a large destroyer is out since the only class fitting the bill were the "tribals" and none went to the US for repairs at this time. I'll keep looking for damaged vessels sailing between 20 June-4 july 1943.
