I am the granddaughter of the previously mentioned ‘Sheila Burns’, daughter of the crew member ‘Robert Burns’ (my great grandad) who lost his life on the 10th November aboard the HMS Ibis.
My grandma was 6 months old when her dad died and she only has a few personal pictures of him, one of which he is in his uniform, and a picture of the crew which I can send to anyone who would like it - please reply to my post for this.
An account from Robert Burns’ shipmates son (surname Pringle) recalled that my great grandad could not swim when they were talking on the ship, which would prove true upon the sinking of the ship. My grandma recalls another memory of someone telling her Mam (my great grandma and wife of Robert Burns) that he battled to get back down into the ship to retrieve a picture of my grandma and my great grandma which he held dear - however we are unsure of how true that is but it gave my family a lot of peace knowing he had them in his pocket until the end.
My grandma believed that is was a German torpedo that sunk the ship when she was little, but learned when she was older that is was an Italian torpedo, which was set as a decoy to saves lives elsewhere.
My grandma has been seeking information, pictures, reports, coloured picture of the U99 HMS Ibis, and stories for her whole life, which I am now trying to obtain for her, as she is 79.
We are from Newcastle, in which Robert Burns spent his life up until his death, where me, my Mam, and my Grandad volunteer to maintain and tidy up Commonwealth War graves in our area, keeping their memories alive.
I would be incredibly grateful if anyone could get in touch with any messages or information or photos that I could share with my Grandma, she will be lost for words and appreciate it very much.
Thank you,
Tayler
