As to his medals -
The Italy Star was awarded to those serving in Italy (or Italian waters) or the Aegean between June 1943 and May 1945.

The Atlantic Star was awarded to those who had served 6 months or more on Atlantic convoys between Sep. 1939 and May 1945.

The Burma Star was awarded to those who had served in the Indian Ocean/ Far East between December 1941 and September 1945.

I would suggest that his time on Marsdale / Aylnbank would have qualified him for the Atlantic; the Searcher probably allowed him the Burma Star.

The Italy Star I am uncertain of - I suspect that the Evadne had something to do with it....

The 1939-45 Star was for all service personnel who served for at least six months during that period

The General Service Medal was typically for campaigns after the war (it should have a clasp on the ribbon, stating the campaign)
