My grandfather Matthew Hall served on HMS Holderness from her commissioning and after the end of the war. He died some years ago and my family have always been interested in his naval career, but never had the chance to talk to him in detail about it. He was chief petty officer and, I think, ship's cook. He was mentioned in dispatches, but not sure what for. We also have a framed photograph of the ship which has been mounted and signed by the entire ships company which I think was by way of celebrating the end of the war.
After the war, I think the ship was stationed in the Far East and he mentioned being involved with dredging for American cruise liners?
Would love to know any more about Holderness or anyone that knew him.
