Sorry to double post, but I have come across some more info. The webpage [members.ziggo.nl] gives a blow-by-blow account, based on signals and telegraphs, of the end of the Slamat. Interestingly the term "sloop" is used frequently to describe small boats - life boats and "motor sloops". It may well be that the combination of the terms (motor) sloop and "Slamat" led to the ship naming confusion.

Personally I'm starting to think that this is probably a case of SNAFU - except it wasn't so funny to the folks back then.
