Hello Gentlemen,
Gaul 270/04 built by Cook,Welton and Gemmell, requisitioned by RN in Feb.'15
and armed with one 12pdr Admiralty No.733.
"At about 9.30am a German submarine appeared on the surface and opened fire on
the trawlers sinking one, the Mayfly. The Gaul and Margate attempted to close
the range and engage the enemy, but the Gaul was reduced to a sinking condition
after being hit repeatedly, the skipper and five men being killed."
British Warships Losses in the Ironclad Era 1860-1919 David Hepper p.87
Naval-Historynet lists 3 as KIAs
The uboat was UC50, the date 24 April'17.
Gaul was not sunk but badly damaged and survived the war.
Respectfully submitted,
Joe R
