A footnote on page 37 in Robert M. Grant's 'U-Boat Intelligence' mentions that U 44 damaged the Norwegian Sailing vessel Solglimt. Looking her up in the database, i.e.
[uboat.net]
it is written that she was sunk by U 75 on August 10, 1917, there is no mention of U 44.
Norwegian, admittedly secondary, sources on the other hand claims that:
... [my translation from norwegian]
1917: Jan.: Renamed SOLGLIMT
1917: 10.08.: Abandoned after having been attacked by the German uboat U 44 in pos. 62.02 N, 03.24 W, while on a voyage from Rosario – Kristiania with maize.
1917: 19.08.: Found abandoned and drifting by the german uboat U 75 and subsequently sunk.
It would be interesting to know what is written in the KTB of U 75 about the sinking of this vessel, i.e. the state of the ship and the date.
Best regards
