As Michael says, the sinking is something of a mystery.
On 1st June 1918, HMT EGRET foundered and was lost while on passage/patrol from Hull, but the reason she sank is still very unclear. Lloyd’s War Losses WWI says an Imperial German submarine sank the RN steam trawler, but none of the WWI U-boat records show this to be true. Possibly she detonated a mine??
