I agree that the two Mercurys sunk in WWI were not in naval service.

As far as the Mercury you are after, there are two possibilities: either she hit a German mine, probably laid by an UCI or converted UBI boat or she hit a British mine. Both are possible. I suspect that there probably were a few trawlers in naval service that were damaged by mines in WWI, however I think there's about zero in our database. I also suspect that the RN never even reported these to the Germans, so Spindler would have nothing to go on.
