<HTML>William,
I would strongly presume that UB 59 fired a torpedo from her stern tube at 11:45pm. However, without the original wording, I can't be certain. (I read German, as do several others on this forum). Firing at a target from astern (while chasing it from behind) was a very good way to make sure you missed.
German submarines, in general, did not pick up survivors. The exception was that U-boat sometimes fished out the sunken ship's master, and occassional any naval personnel aboard (i.e. gunnners). There's nothing to suggest that the treatment they typically received was anything but proper. Some commanders did make notable attempts to ensure that survivors were rescued.
Best wishes,
Michael</HTML>
