<HTML>Brian,
Those boats were not initially fitted with a gun, it was decided to have them fitted in Jan.1915 when it became obvious that the submarines would be the major weapon in the war against allied shipping. Progressively the boats were equipped and it seems that by the end of march this was completed. But per Spindler, it is clearly indicated that U-37 left without gun. 3 ships are credited to this boat, two were torpedoed and a third one, the british steamer Delmira was sunk with scuttling charges. I should be inclined to believe that this boat was not yet fitted when she left for that patrol on March 23 and the circumstances of attacks against shipping she performed seem to confirm that hypothesis. But would like to be definitely sure, maybe if someone has an access to the flottila's KTB.
