My mother and her sister lived in Leven in Fife, on the Firth of Forth for a while during the First World War. (They moved back to Glasgow around 1916.) My aunt told me she remembered naval ships circling a U boat and sinking it.

She is unlikely to have seen something near Dunbar as Dunbar is further round the coast.
