<HTML>Hi Judy,
HMAS AE.1 was the first sub commissioned by the RAN, completed 1913, 655/796 ts, 4-18" torpedo tubes, her Captain was Lt Cdr T. F. Besant.
On 13/9/1914 she was in company of destroyer Parramatta, patrolling in the Bismarck sea in an attempt to locate the German gunboat Geier. Near Cape Gazelle, at the south end of Blanche Bay, Rabaul, the two vessels parted company to scout idependently along the coast and AE.1 was never heard from again. There are a lot of speculations on her loss but since the wreck has not been located it is going to be forever a guess as to what really happened.
Best regards, Brian</HTML>
