<HTML>This is probably based on the attempts by E48 to ambush U156 on 17/01/17 in the Bay of Naos on Hierro, Canary islands. Grant in U-Boat Hunters gives the full details. The U156 was supposed to be meeting a ship bringing a cargo of Wolfram ore from Spain, the cargo was to be transferred to the u-boat for transport back to Germany. The British became aware of this via intelligence and a sent submarine to try and sink the u-boat.
4 men on the deck of U156 jumped overboard when they sighted a torpedo from E48 approaching, the torpedo hit U156 but did not explode, 2 of the men swam ashore to be interned, another was recovered by the u-boat while the last drowned.
