Dänemark,
Good catch. The "Gangut" article is the Russian account of the November 2 action and is a match for the Norwegian survivor's story:
"At 12:20, when the range had been reduced to 5 calbes, GROZOVOI opened fire from the forward 75mm gun.
The first hit -- on the conning tower of the submarine -- was achieved with the second shot. Continuing to pass with the target on a reciprocal course, GROZOVOI fired a total of twelve rounds, scoring three more hits: two in the stern below the waterline (one of these hits caused a repeat (second) explosion within the (submarine's) hull) and one on the deck between the conning tower and the after gun. After 6 minues the sub began to submerge slowly by the stern and sank. At 12:26 the destroyer ceased fire and put about about to join the detachment."
U 56 then survived this action and was lost by unknown cause on or after November 3. (Some of my sources got the details of the Ivanhoe story wrong...)
Best wishes,
Michael
