the first submarine sunk PURELY by aircraft action (as opposed to scuttling, ships guns/torpedo, ramming etc) was in 1917.
the plane was a modified curtiss/lowestoft f2b from the lowestoft station
Malcolm Frederick George Mill (MFG Mill) originally a naval carpenter on the Russell (flagship) was awarded the DFM for the action.
the aircraft spotted the submarine on the surface and went into an attacking dive.... MFG Mill dropped a couple of bombs on the submarine.... one of the bombs found its way through the conning tower hatch as the decks cleared for diving.... the bomb blew a hole in the bottom of the submarine and it sunk quickly.... most lives were lost.
MFG Mill never got over it and refused to talk about it.... he was ORDERED to accept the DFM by his pilot.
Malcolm Mill is the family name of the eldest male from Colluden to present day.
