That above sentence I find extremely hard if not impossible to believe of any maritime nation. A seaman ordered to stand at the salute while fellow human beings were, in effect, 'MURDERED'.
Murder at sea did and has happened but not,I hope, while the victims were being saluted.........that sickens war even more.

A salute to the honourable dead when they are being interred or buried at sea is acceptable as it would acknowledge the passing of brave men who fought both the elements and their enemy.

"An interesting story, but I can't find any confirmation anywhere."

I would be inclined to leave the 'ghosts' of this tale to rest.
