the other parts to the story are these: my grandfather recalled ( apparrently) evacuating refugees from Russia, repairing a wheel that got the boat to dock after being torpedoed, and breaking ice from the sides of the boat with hammers, ice that formed with every high wave. Just an old man's memories retold to me. he was a very reliable man, never one for tall stories, and I just wanted to investigate the reliability of them. Sounds as if they were not actually real. He was a chief petty officer, engineer.
