Hi Michael D,

Lauterbach, Julius. geb 24.11.1877. Crew 11.02. Kptlt.d.R. 24.12.15(Z)
"EMDEN I",Priz. Offiz. 11.14. Kohlendpf. "ERFORD" (Begleitschff. d. "EMDEN"), Komdt. 12.14. England (Singapore) Krgef. 2.15. Entflohen. 10.15. Hs. Schff. "K", Komdt. 1.16 - 11.17; verw. 1. Handelsschutzhalbfl., z. Vfg. 1.18. Hs.Schff.
"MOEWE", Komdt. bis Ende. a.D. 31.12.18.

Llowell Thomas wrote a book about him called (I think) "Lauterbach of the China Sea". He was, if memory serves me well, quite a big jovial man and spent quite a bit of his life in the far ease. He was a sort of "larger than life character"
Thats about all I have on him unless I can dig out the book and have another read of it.

By permission of Kaiser Wilhelm II he, like the rest of the crew of SMS EMDEM were allowed to hyphenate their surname adding the word EMDEN after the family name. I believe that Hans-Jürgen Lauterbach-Emden Born 20 May, 1919 in Neubrandenburg, Crew 37a. Kapitänleutnant 01.03.44 & commander of U-539 may have been a relation of his but I am not sure which though I would guess at his son as I don't think that the "..........-EMDEN" surname applied to other family members only to those who actually served on that ship.

Hope this is of some use
Regards
MPC
