On 04 May 1917 the Greek steamer 'Ioannis P. Goulandris' (ex- 'Foylemore' [1st]; 5,153 g.r.t.) was torpedoed and sunk by a German submarine in the Bay of Biscay.
On 30 December 1917 the ?Spanish? steamer 'Joaquin Mumbru' (ex- 'Puerto Rico', exx- 'Cristobal Colon', exxx- 'Rossmore’ [1st]; 2,677 g.r.t.) was captured in the Mid Atlantic Ocean by a German submarine 100 miles S.S.W. from Funchal, Madeira Islands of Portugal; then the ship was Scuttled and Sunk by enemy placed demolition charges.
Please can anyone kindly add any details about these sinkings, such as 'by which submarine(s)', more precise locations, any details of the voyages the merchant ships were engaged upon, better owner information than the very 'bare bones' info. I currently have, etc.? Alternatively, suggestions as to published sources where such details are actually to be found would be much appreciated.
Reason? I am compiling a history of the Johnston Line of Liverpool, original owners of both of these ships and - thus far - these details have eluded my researches. Thank You.
