Many thanks to start with!
So there is a possible candidate. Are the war diaries of the WWI boats somewhere available? Microfilmed at NARA in the US maybe? And if so; is there a find-book for the WWI U-boat war? Other places?
Would a commander have written down such – well – let say 'private' raids in the war diary in the first place? Was that liberty allowed by the German High Command?
The two boats U-24 and U-90 show up as both belonging to Flottilla III. (Where was Flottilla III based by the way?) Is that the one that hunting grounds included the Hebrides?
Can I rule out any boats assigned to other Flottillas or were the hunting areas overlapping somewhat?
If only Commanders sailing boats assigned to Flottilla III are possible then the search narrows down quite a bit. If not … any suggestions are very welcome!
A friend of ours sailed his yacht into Clas Uig this summer and he said it would have been the perfect place to lie low and recharge. It is remote even by West of Scotland standards and it has a natural jetty to go alongside and a sandy area where one could simply lay a U-boat aground. And thanks to a slight bend and some rocky isles in the entrance it is well sheltered from inquisitive look from passing ships … in all a perfect hunting lair.
But without a name and a U-boat number the story is somewhat robbed of its hero (or its villain as far as the sheep are concerned).
Thank you!
